Employment: Guide

AOLTI maintains a local, national and international network of professional linguists including translators, editors, proofreaders, and interpreters who have expertise in many specialized fields such as law, healthcare, information technology, international development, and marketing. We consider our professional contractors to be our most valuable resource and offer them a competitive pay scale.

AOLTI is affiliated with several organizations. We uphold the codes of ethics and business practices set forth by these organizations. All work done for AOLTI must comply with these standards.

Translator Opportunities

Highly recommended qualifications:

  • Strong writing skills in target/dominant language
  • Near-native proficiency in source language
  • At least three years experience as full-time freelance translator
  • Power user of Microsoft Office suite of programs
  • Experience or familiarity with localization
  • Subject specialization
  • Quality reference materials
  • Proven record of timely project deliveries
  • Strong references

Preferred qualifications:

  • ATA certification in your language pair, if offered
  • Bachelor or Master of Arts degree in Translation studies
  • Formal training in the study of Translation and Interpretation industry standards
  • Formal training and/or experience in Localization
  • Training or experience with Desktop Publishing (InDesign, Illustrator, etc.)
  • Training and/or experience with Translation Memory tools and processes (Trados/SDLX, Wordfast, MemoQ, etc.)
  • University-level degree in a subject other than Translation/Interpretation
  • Established network of colleagues (translators, editors, proofreaders)
  • Other relevant certifications (such as Court or DSHS)

  • All interpreters must abide by the Washington State Court Ethics and Guidelines for Interpreters.
  • All interpreters who interpret for AOLTI must have a Washington State Patrol check.
  • Interpreters who wish to interpret in the medical field must have passed the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) interpreter exams (DSHS Certification) and have current immunization records (MMR, Varicella, Tdap, TB).
  • If you wish to interpret for AOLTI at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) facility, you must take the Academy's SCCA interpreter training course and pass the Academy's written exam. Please inquire for training dates and times.
  • Interpreters who wish to interpret for AOLTI in the legal field must be Court Certified in the State of Washington if they work with a language that is currently court-certifiable (as of Feb 2016, the list includes Arabic (Egyptian), Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Cantonese, French, Korean, Laotian, Mandarin, Marshallese, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog and Vietnamese). If Court Certification is not offered in the interpreter's language, Court Registration must be obtained if available in that language.
  • Interpreter resumes should include the following information:
    • Language pair
    • Certification(s)
    • Level of language skill and where your language skills were acquired
    • Previous interpreting experience
    • Relevant education and work experience
